A Look at the Bublue BuVortex V5 Robotic Pool Skimmer

Surface skimming has never really been the exciting part of pool maintenance. It’s tedious, repetitive, and usually done with a net. That’s why most pool owners either leave it to the built-in skimmer or let floating debris collect until it sinks.

But the reality is this: what happens on the surface affects everything else. Leaves, pollen, oils, insects—if you don’t get to them early, they break down, clog filters, throw off chemistry, and eventually settle into places that are harder to clean. Daily surface maintenance isn’t optional if you’re serious about keeping a pool healthy and looking good. It’s just one of those things that never got much attention from the tech side—until now.

The BuVortex V5 is Bublue’s answer to a straightforward question: what if someone made a robot that was actually good at surface skimming? Not a floor cleaner with a floating add-on, not a toy that simply pushes bugs around, but something purpose-built for the top six inches of the pool. It’s a single-function device, and that’s exactly why it works.

A Closer Look at the System

The V5 relies on a few key technologies to do its job effectively. “Bluehole” is the name Bublue gives to its active suction system. Instead of relying on passive collection, it pulls debris toward the intake using a vortex-like flow.

Navigation is handled by what Bublue calls “Bluesonic.” That’s their term for the AI pathing system that lets the V5 plan its movements rather than just bounce around the pool randomly. In practice, the robot moves with a bit more intention than older surface bots—less overlap, fewer missed areas, and better overall coverage.

Where the V5 does stand out is in its handling of pool edges. It doesn’t just skim in open water. When it detects a wall, it enters a corner cleaning mode called “Bluestream,” increasing suction and lingering along the perimeter for 15 minutes. That’s where a lot of debris builds up, and most surface skimmers either ignore it or can’t get close enough to do anything useful. Here, it’s a smart addition that fills a real gap.

Practical Design That Makes Sense

The V5 is compact—just over 15 inches long and around 11 pounds. It’s easy to lift out of the pool when it’s done, and the onboard LED lighting helps if you’re fishing it out at dusk. Retrieval is handled through the app; one tap tells the bot to come to the pool edge. It listens.

Inside is a 5-liter dual-layer filter system. There’s a large basket for leaves and larger debris, paired with a sponge-like secondary filter that catches finer particles like pollen or sand. The filter is easy to remove and clean, and there’s a built-in overflow guard to keep things from spilling back into the pool during pickup.

The battery is a 7,800 mAh lithium unit, good for about 180 minutes of runtime. That’s enough for pools up to 538 square feet, which covers most residential applications. It recharges in about four hours—not fast, but not out of line for a product in this category. There’s no charging dock; just plug it in directly with the included cable.

The body is built from UV-resistant materials and rated for immersion up to 3 meters. You’re not supposed to submerge it completely, but if it gets dunked or stuck briefly, it’s not going to die. Every unit is pressure-tested at the factory before shipping. You get a 2-year warranty out of the box.

No Gimmicks, Just a Cleaner Surface

There’s no shortage of overpromising in pool tech these days. Plenty of companies slap together a robot, throw around words like “AI,” and call it a revolution. The V5 isn’t trying to do all that. It’s not super flashy and doesn’t come with a bunch of superfluous features that you’ll never use. It just skims the surface of your pool, consistently and without the usual annoyances.

You’ll still need a vacuum or a robotic cleaner for the floor. You’ll still need to test your water, brush the walls, and deal with circulation. But you probably won’t need to net the surface as often. And that’s worth something—especially if your pool sees a lot of leaf litter, bug activity, or sunscreen residue.

App control is simple. It connects via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, giving you remote access to battery status, filter alerts, and software updates. You can also run over-the-air firmware updates when Bublue releases improvements.
