Kitsilano Pool, Vancouver’s famous pool, is in crisis. It is leaking water at a rate of 30,000 L (7.925 gal) per hour due to damaged recirculation pipe.
The City’s Park Board was shown a presentation that indicated this is 500 L (132 Gal) per minute.
Recent condition assessments have determined that it is nearing the end of its useful life. This will be further exacerbated by damage caused by storms in 2022. Staff add de-chlorination tablet to prevent environmental impact but the exact destination of water remains unknown.
In a Vancouver Sun report, Tom Digby describes the situation as “devastating,” and that it could have an impact on the outdoor pool season in 2024.
Engineers do not know the exact location of leaks, but it is believed that some water leaks reach the ocean. A feasibility study on possible renewal will be done in 2027-2030’s capital plan, as there are no funds available for the current budget. The proposal by Mayor Ken Sim to transfer the park board’s responsibilities to city officials adds yet another layer of uncertainty about Kitsilano Pool.
