Swimming pools are popular in the summer months. Pools are crowded with people playing, splashing and swimming from Victoria Day to Labour Day and sometimes even beyond. The temperatures outside rise and the bather load increases.

To keep pool water in the best condition, you must work continuously throughout the season. Various factors can cause water quality problems that were not apparent when the pool first opened.

Pool operators and technicians must consider certain factors to tailor their recommendations in order to prevent unattractive conditions and possible hazards for swimmers. If you follow pool maintenance procedures, your water will remain safe and clean not only during the summer, but well into fall.

How to keep the water clean

Prioritizing the sanitization process is key to establishing an effective routine of pool maintenance. This will eliminate harmful organisms. Although chlorine is an effective way to kill most biological contaminants it may not be able to eliminate all types of pollution. Exploring alternative methods to maintain the desired water quality is important as the demand for pool chemical increases.

Chemicals that work in harmony

Pool owners can use cyanuric acids (CYA) to stabilize chlorine, and increase its effectiveness. Trichlor tablets may also be able to slow down the dissolution of tablets, and some varieties contain other components that provide benefits such as clarification or scaling inhibition. Additionally, additional chemicals can help eliminate unwanted contaminants and complement chlorine’s primary function of targeting biological organisms.

Routine oxidation

The pool must be cleaned of waste products from rain, swimming, thunderstorms and vegetation nearby. Some pool operators use oxidizers only to deal with major issues such as algae or cloudy water. However, performing weekly shocks can be a more cost-effective way to maintain a clean swimming pool.
