Cold Water Therapy has many benefits for the body, including reducing muscle pain, improving recovery, decreasing inflammation, and improving circulation.
Rob Carlin, the Managing Director of Superior Wellness, took part in a study to evaluate the benefits of using Chill Tubs in his daily routine in June 2023.
In partnership with TransformNow Superior Wellness, we set out to see what happened to Rob’s body after he used the ice bath daily for 30 days before his daily workout. TransformNow founder Dr Imran Khan has 20 years of experience both on a practical level and an academic one in the health industry. This study was supported by his expertise. With offices across the country they are proud of their UK Fitness Awards for 2019 in Science and Innovation.
Rob visited Dr Imran Khan in Birmingham to receive different assessments. These included the following levels of the body:
- Levels of inflammation: C Reactive Protein (CRP), Erythrocyte Saturation Rate (ESR), and Interleukin-6(IL-6).
- Testosterone levels : Total Testosterone Test and Free Testosterone Test
- Additional Markers : Complete Blood Count, Blood Urea Nitrate (BUN), Creatinine and Liver Function Tests.
- Subjective markers: Energy levels, sleep quality and mood
-
Bodyfat Percentage
-
Expiration Lung Volume Test
Superior Wellness documented Rob’s Chill Tub 30 day study journey through social media, with regular updates on his progress and videos showing any changes that he began to notice. He noticed his energy and recovery levels improved. He also felt happier and was sleeping better.
Rob had the same tests done with TransformNow, at the end 30 days of the study. This allowed us to compare the results. The tests were done exactly one month later and at the exact same time.
Dr Imran Khan confirmed that “all markers are slightly improved by a few percent points.” The study showed that inflammation decreased from 9,06 to 7,06 mg/L. This is a 22% reduction.
“Rob’s testosterone levels increased by 16%, from 12.20 to 14.00 nmol/L. His cortisol level also decreased by 24.9%. Rob’s Rheumatoid factor has dropped from 10 down to 9.00, and his Interleukin 6 from 4.6 up to 3.2.
“Rob has an advantage because he’s already extremely lean, and he trains every day. The results show only a small change. The results may have been different if we had conducted the same study on someone who was of a different physique and did not regularly exercise.
“The study lasted only one month.” The results could have been greater if the study had lasted eight weeks rather than four.
Overall, I can say using the chill tub daily has shown that it can lead to minor improvements in the body. We can’t say conclusively that the study proves this, but it certainly is a good indication.
Rob’s weight dropped from 77.5kg down to 75.8kg. His BMI also decreased from 23.4kg to 22.9kg and his body-fat percentage went from 12.8% down to 11.9%. Rob’s genetically-determined age was 2.5 years younger than his actual age, which is yet another indication that taking an ice bath daily is beneficial.
Rob shared his experience of using the Chill Tub on a daily basis: “I enjoyed it.” After a few days, I found it easy to use the Chill Tub. I noticed a significant difference in my energy level and it helped me recover from my training.
“I have poor circulation. I took a picture at the beginning of the study, and then at the end. My circulation had improved significantly.”
“I also felt that it improved my mental well-being. I felt more positive and happier, and I slept better on average.
“I would like thank Imran and his team at TransformNow for providing me with the test to conduct this study.
“I also continue with my ice bath journey, and now I am a regular Chill Tubs user.”
Regular use of the Chill Tub has many advantages, both physically and psychologically such as improving circulation and decreasing inflammation.
Chill tubs may not be suitable for all people and they can even be dangerous. Always consult a medical professional before beginning any new recovery regimen.
