Florida Swims Foundation Announces Margaret M. Brown Scholarship 2023 Recipients

The Margaret M. Brown Scholarship Fund has provided more than 30 scholarships for college and continuing education students totaling over $70,000.

The Dr. Bill Kent Family Foundation generously matched the initial award amount of almost $35,000. The $70,000 distributed by the FSPA was donated by more than 25 FSPA members.

Elizabeth McMurray is the FSPA’s Chief Executive Officer. She said, “FSPA and Florida Swims Foundation are proud to provide these scholarships each year to deserving student thanks to the Margaret M. Brown Scholarship Fund.” This program is not only a great way to encourage and support our industry dependents in their academic pursuits, but also a fantastic membership benefit which helps ease some of the financial burden on families and students.

The Margaret M. Brown Scholarship Fund, administered by the Florida Swimming Pool Association(FSPA), is available to employees and dependents of members of FSPA. This program helps parents pay for the high costs of college. The Florida Swims Foundation is the organization responsible for presenting the award. This 501(c),(3) non-profit also manages the scholarship fund and funds swim lessons throughout the state.

The Margaret M. Brown Scholarship Fund, named after Derek Brown’s mother, has been a valuable and esteemed asset for students and their parents in the pool and spa industries for over 30 years. My father Ken Brown established this fund in honor of my mother over 30 years ago. The Brown family supports the FSPA, swimming pool industry and continuing education of our most deserving youth.

Merit scholarships are available to students at any level of post-secondary schooling. These merit scholarships are based on academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, community service, and a research report on a topic related to the pool industry. The program has given out an average of $25,000.00 per year to the dependents of pool professionals.

Noelle Knowlton is a 2023 Margaret M. Brown scholarship recipient pursuing a communications specialized degree at Florida State University. “Thank you to the Foundation for their valuable contribution to my education. This has allowed me to pursue opportunities outside of my studies that have enabled my aspirations come true.”

The scholarship application for 2024 will be available next spring. Visit the Florida Swims Foundation for more information.
