Regina’s new and highly anticipated community asset, Wascana Pool was inaugurated recently with a ceremony that included a ribbon cutting hosted by the Government of Saskatchewan.
Wascana Pool’s renewal cost $16.4 Million. The Municipal Economic Enhancement Program of Saskatchewan (MEEP) provided funding of $12 million, and the remaining $4.4 millions was contributed by the city.
Larissa Kitchemonia from Key First Nation in Anishnaabe/Saulteaux, spoke also at the event. Kitchemonia created the entrance gate. It is a metal piece inspired by the land where Wascana Park lies and acknowledges a quote from the treaty: “As long the sun shines and the grass grows, and as long as the river flows.”
A time capsule was also buried on site as part of the celebration. The time capsule will document the opening of Wascana Pool and commemorate the spirit of the old Wascana Pool, which served the community over 70 years.
Participants enjoyed the many amenities of this facility, including a waterslide, a lazy-river, a diving tank and lap pool, as well as a hot tub and climbing wall. The Bannock House also operates a concession. Residents enjoyed the inclusive and accessible playground located outside the pool facility.
Don McMorris, Saskatchewan’s minister of government relations, said, “Our province was proud to contribute $12 million to the City of Regina Wascana Pool Renewal Project, which offers residents and visitors an excellent recreational opportunity to come together with family and friends to beat the prairie summer heat.” The facility’s accessible and inclusive design makes this project a huge splash.
