Many viewers were shocked and amazed by a recent video that became viral on Twitter. Gary Clayton, a Dublin, TX resident, posted the video. It shows a hailstorm with baseball-sized hail pelting an unfortunate bull caught in it. In just a few short hours, the video had over half a milllion views. This shows the intensity of the storm.
Gary Clayton recorded the massive hailstones that pelted the swimming pool in his backyard on Wednesday as supercell storms moved through Dublin. The usual oasis was transformed into a boiling cauldron by the icy attack from the skies.

A large bull ran beyond Gary’s fence shortly after. It was likely looking for shelter from the hailstones, which can reach speeds between 44-72mph. The cow found shelter and was not injured.
Cattle are grazing animals. It’s hard to find a barn for them all. Clayton said that they would probably not go into a tin barn due to the noise of the hail. I knew that the only place he could go to for shelter was under some trees. He was going to hide under trees to break the falling hailstones.
Storm spotters in the Dublin area reported hail up to the size of baseballs and tennis balls, with a diameter of 2.5-3 inches. It was one of several reports of large hail that moved through Texas and along the Gulf Coast Wednesday.
Although hailstorms are common, this storm’s severity has made many realize the importance of being ready for these events. There are several things people can do when hail is predicted to protect their property and themselves.
Hail Scale
Non-Severe
- The pea size is 1/4 inch
- The size of a mothball is 1/2 inch
- Penny size = 3/4 inch
- Nickel size = 7/8 inch
Severe
- Quarter sized = 1 inch
- Ping Pong Balls sized at 1 1/2 inches
- Golf Ball Size = 1 3/4 Inches
- The size of a hen egg is 2 inches
Highly-Severe
- Tennis Ball Size = 2 1/2 Inches
- Baseball size = 2 3/4 inch
- Softball size = 4 inches
- Grapefruit sized = 4 1/2 inches
Baseball-sized hail is comparable to a Major League Fastball that’s hurled out of the clouds. When a hailstorm of severe or high intensity is approaching, it is important to get all vehicles covered if at all possible. It’s important to keep your car windows and roofs protected during hailstorms. Consider covering your vehicles with tarps or thick blankets if you do not have a garage.
The homeowner should also protect their windows and roofs from damage caused by hail. Installing impact-resistant roofing and windows is a good idea if you live in an area that’s prone to storms. Trimming nearby trees will also help to prevent your roof from being damaged by branches that break off during a storm.
should avoid covering swimming pools during a hailstorm. While this may seem logical, a cover could be severely damaged by hail the size of a fist. It can lead to costly repairs and replacements, so it is best to avoid covering your pool during a storm.
Consider moving any outdoor decorations or furniture inside during a storm. Patio furniture, garden ornaments, and outdoor grills can be severely damaged by large hailstones. You can protect these items from damage by bringing them indoors.
