The Wai Kai Wave pool, located in Oahu, is the largest wave pool in the state spanning over 100 feet wide, and it’s a first for Hawaii. This $40 million dollar water-focused facility, known as The LineUp at Wai Kai, is home to the Wai Kai Wave and offers visitors more than just a wave pool. The 52-acre Wai Kai Lagoon provides a range of water activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing.
Despite being located on the shoreline of Oahu, which is known for having some of the best surfing in the world, the Wai Kai Wave pool is actually a freshwater pool that has been dubbed the “world’s largest deep-water standing surf wave.” The Ewa Beach wave pool holds 1.7 million gallons of fresh water, an amount equivalent to about 2.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
There are inherent limitations to ocean surfing as a sport. The world’s best surf breaks only operate during specific times of the year and require a specific combination of swell direction, period, size, wind, and tide to be ideal for surfing. Additionally, there is often stiff competition for waves, particularly in high-quality conditions, with surfers jostling for the same peak. The Wai Kai Wave aims to offer world-class surfing year-round no matter what the local ocean surf conditions may be.

Using citywave technology, the Wai Kai Wave is an adaptable and endless wave, ranging from two to six feet in height, suitable for all skill levels. It can accommodate up to three surfers at once, with an additional 30 individuals in the barefoot zone. Citywave® offers a consistent and never-ending wave that makes the sport of surfing available to individuals of all skill levels. While it is simple to learn, mastering it is a challenge. This patented deep-water technology produces a wave that can reach up to 6 feet in height with maximum pressure, and traditional surfboards with fins can be used, ensuring a secure and controlled surfing experience.
Designed to emulate renowned natural standing river waves such as the Waimea River Sand Bar in Oahu’s North Shore, the Wai Kai Wave was produced in collaboration with X Games Gold Medalist and former world No. 2 ranked surfer, Shane Beschen, who hails from Oahu. Beschen and other former and current professional surfers are available for in-person instruction and training sessions.
Wai Kai offers a year-round escape where locals and tourists can immerse themselves in the beauty of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaiian culture, and nature through unique activities and events. Aside from surfing, it promises to provide a relaxed atmosphere for families and friends to come together, relax, and make lasting memories.
Guests can also enjoy front-row viewing of the surf action at The LookOut Bar & Restaurant, exclusive access to the Nalo Kai private club lounge, and the comfort of cabanas on both the surf and lagoon sides. The boardwalk above the Wai Kai Lagoon will feature Foam Coffee & Bar and Sessions Lifestyle & Apparel shop. Furthermore, the Wai Kai event lawn and special event tent will be open to guests. The LineUp at Wai Kai will host a variety of signature events and weekly programming.
