Fluidra makes a dedicated shift to more efficient LED pool lighting

The company is taking energy-savings to the next level

SAN DIIEGO – March 1, 2023– New lighting regulations from the Department of Energy (DOE), which aim to reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and ban some incandescent light sales, are about to transform the swimming pool industry. Fluidra is a global leader in pool equipment and connected solutions for the pool and wellness industry and has made it clear that it will not only comply with, but exceed, these new regulations.

These new regulations apply to pool lights that have a lumen range of between 310 and 3300 lumens (roughly 25 watts to incandescent lamps) and build on the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. This act established energy efficiency standards for common household lighting products. The new regulations require manufacturers to make lighting products that use less energy, which will result in substantial cost savings for consumers. The DOE requested independent environmental studies to determine if this regulation will have a net benefit to consumers of $3 billion over the next 30 years.

The new regulations require compliance with the following:

* Manufacturers cannot sell incandescent lamps that are not compliant if they were manufactured or imported after January 1, 2023.

* Retailers and distributors can no longer resell incandescent lamps that are not compliant with penalties starting March 1, 2023. The reduced penalties will continue until July 31, 2023.

These regulations apply to Fluidra’s 100W, 300W incandescent lighting products. The company is determined to reduce its carbon footprint through both its business practices as well as the products it makes, and has decided to stop making incandescent lamps. The company will now only make LED lights, which have been proven to save homeowners up to 87%*.

Fluidra president Lennie Rhoades stated that pool owners want more than a beautiful pool. They also want to save money and reduce environmental impact. We are always searching for ways to make pools more efficient. This could be through variable-speed technology or by adding a cover that conserves water, heat, and chemicals. We are already seeing a natural shift within the industry towards LED-based lighting technologies. These new DOE regulations offer us an opportunity to accelerate this transition. We are certain that these new regulations will result in cost savings and increased efficiency for our customers.

*Calculation is based on comparison of a white incandescent lamp with a lumen output of 500W and a white LED light with a similar lumen output.

Fluidra will replace the incandescent lighting of the past generation. Fluidra will continue to expand its extensive range of LED lighting options. This includes the Infinite WaterColors LED Lights. Fluidra is confident that their lighting solutions will address the sustainability concerns of pool owners and provide a superior experience for pool owners.
