Make a splash with innovative pool designs

Innovation and pool design experts are always on the cutting-edge; ready to make the next big thing. But what do they see on the horizon for pool design?

Experts in pool design, construction, parts, and technology are well-known for their constant pursuit to find the next big thing in water-filled leisure.

Engagement is the future of pool design. Justin Fox, landscape designer and co-owner of Foxterra Design in Irvine, California, says that unique engagement is the future of pool design. We create spaces that are not typical, but offer more unexpected features. We want outdoor spaces that are more than just a pool.

TRANSPORT TREND

Foxterra Design is a team of outdoor designers who are experts at designing spaces that move. Fox uses flow, materials, and features to achieve this goal. However, Fox also employs a sophisticated design style.

Fox points out that there is a lot of interest in organic modern designs. This style incorporates wood tones and natural elements that are reflective of Talum (Mexico), or white facades and surfaces such as those found in Santorini, Greece.

Fox views the organic modern style as giving off a California vibe but also being a cutting-edge trend whose reach extends beyond the Pacific Coast.

Fox says, “I believe there is a shift away from the high contrast of dark Granite surfaces and pool interiors” to the whites or neutrals. Fox continues, “Although more than half of our work takes place outside of the state, this organic modern style is still leading the way.” Developers and designers across the globe are now interested in what was popular on the West Coast.

Fox’s choice of in-pool tile for furnishings follows the same style trend. Handmade tiles from Morocco, which capture the colors of light aqua waters can also be a symbol for artisan-wrought magic. Fox is a fan of custom-built-in day beds, handcrafted hanging lights, and non-raised firepits.

Beach Water Bodies

Not only is it the goal of pool designers but also of pool technology innovators to transport individuals to resort-like environments. Crystal Lagoons, an industry expert, is aware of this. Its patented state-of the-art technology allows developers to incorporate man-made lagoons in any size project.

Crystal Lagoons was founded by Fernando Fischmann and is an award-winning innovator in sustainability, entrepreneurship and innovation. This model is patentable and allows investors and developers to create entertainment hubs that are anchored by turquoise-water lagoons or white sand beaches.

“With more than 1000 projects currently in various stages around the globe, our technology is focused to improve people’s lives by adding attractive meeting places for people in their communities,” said Ivan Manzur (senior VP of sales at Crystal Lagoons US Corp). “In turn, this technology helps solve some the most pressing sustainability problems such as water scarcity and energy scarcity.”

This futuristic technology can be seen in Sole Mia, a multi-family community that spans 183 acres in South Florida. The first of its kind in Miami is a seven-acre crystal lagoon. The lagoon, which has white sand beaches and panoramic views, is the main attraction of the development. It is located adjacent to ONE Park Tower By Turnberry.

Clear Point of View

Outdoor design is all about the view, whether it’s from above, below, and through. Underwater windows offer views of the commercial and consumer pool industry from 500 feet up or nearly 70 feet long. One segment, however, is seeing significant growth.

“Over the last 25 years, we have worked with public aquariums and zoos. Jason Jovaag is Aquatic Glazing International’s general manager. “But times have changed, and now our products are being integrated into 15 to 20 residential pool per month using the same technology.”

The first American cantilevered pool with see-through features, such as the one on Houston’s Market Square’s 50th Floor, was created in the United States. Aquatic Glazing designs can be found everywhere from dormitories to Hawaiian resorts. One of the designs is currently in development, and it involves an intra-pool shark aquarium viewed through four windows. Underwater windows are now a popular feature in residential settings. They can be used to add light to sunken fire places or provide views under the pool for swim-up bars.

Residential Splash

Experts in the field are recognizing a shift in residential pool design that involves resort style and engaging elements.

Ryan Hughes, Ryan Hughes Design Build’s creative director and owner, says that the outdoors are no longer viewed as an extension of the interiors. In many cases, outdoor areas are recognized as the main living space of the home. To accommodate and define the overall aesthetic of the home, exterior spaces are being constructed with depth, texture and elevation shifts. This is all from the outside.

Clients of the Hughes team are also increasingly using alternative layers of design elements, such as sanctuary extensions. The main bedroom/bathroom sanctuary is designed to provide elegant and improved relaxation areas. Casitas and pavilions are also in fashion to offer alternative settings for relaxation, entertainment or personal retreats.

What lies ahead

Innovation and pool design experts are always on the cutting-edge; ready to make the next big thing. But what do they see on the horizon for pool design?

Ryan Hughes says, “We are not only creating more stunning pool designs but we are also responding to requests for unique water features such as walls surrounding the pool or water intermixed in with landscaping in more creative ways.”

Crystal Lagoons, with its technology to bring waterfront living to residential developments around the world, sees the future as a greater emphasis on Public Access Lagoons projects. Manzur comments, “These developments create urban beach life by bringing ocean to people’s doorsteps.”

Fox says, “We see the future being about the addition to more engaging elements in outdoor spaces and the creation ultra-resort-like experience.”

Aquatic Glazing International has been embracing the demands for larger sizes and more configurations in its collaboration with high-end designers. Jovaag says, “Pushing beyond the norm excites our team.” We have achieved many remarkable things by pushing the limits. We are looking forward to tomorrow’s challenge.
